Localization Engineer (LE)

Location: Hybrid – Amsterdam, Berlin, Stockholm, Tallinn

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly technical, hands-on Localization Engineer (LE) to build, automate, and optimize an internationalization (i18n) and localization (l10n) technical infrastructure within a Crowdin deployment.

In this role, you will be the technical core of the globalization team, bridging software engineering and product operations. You will own the direct technical integration between the codebase, CI/CD deployment pipelines, and the translation management ecosystem. You will configure automated workflows, manage file parsing and pseudo-localization, resolve string-handling issues, and write the automation scripts necessary to deliver continuous, friction-free localization at scale.

The ideal candidate brings extensive, deep technical expertise with CrowdIn / CrowdIn Enterprise, along with a proven track record of configuring custom parsers, REST APIs, webhooks, and repository integrations across web, mobile, and backend platforms.

Key Responsibilities

1. CrowdIn Architecture & Technical Operations

• Design, build, and maintain technical project configurations, branches, and file structures within CrowdIn / CrowdIn Enterprise.

• Write, test, and optimize custom file parsers (JSON, YAML, XML, XLIFF, Gettext, etc.) and segmentation rules within CrowdIn to ensure clean text extraction without breaking code syntax.

• Implement automated Quality Assurance (QA) rules, regex filters, string character limits, and variable protection within the CrowdIn platform.

• Configure and maintain CrowdIn plugins and integrations across design tools (Figma), repositories (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket), and content platforms.

  
  

2. Automation, APIs & CI/CD Pipelines

• Develop and maintain custom scripts (Python, Node.js, Bash, etc.) and middleware utilizing the CrowdIn REST API and webhooks to automate source content intake and localized build returns.

• Integrate continuous localization workflows directly into modern CI/CD software pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins) for automated string extraction and release bundling.

• Build and manage pseudo-localization automated runs to proactively identify UI clipping, hardcoded strings, concatenated variables, and RTL display bugs during early design and development phases.

3. Internationalization (i18n) & Developer Support

• Partner directly with frontend, backend, and mobile engineering teams to establish and enforce code-level i18n standards (ICU message syntax, pluralization, date/time/currency formatting).

• Perform technical code and source asset reviews to identify and remediate hardcoded strings, dynamic concatenation, and string key naming inconsistencies before build staging.

• Provide technical troubleshooting for complex build failures, encoding errors, broken variables, or parser issues across all build environments.

4. Workflow Optimization & Quality Automation

• Collaborate with the Localization Program Manager (LPM) and Solutions Architect to streamline source-to-release workflows and reduce technical debt.

• Build automated technical QA validation pipelines to prevent broken code syntax or malformed placeholder variables from ever reaching production builds.

• Document technical workflows, API integrations, developer guidelines, and troubleshooting steps for internal engineering and product teams.

Required Qualifications

• Experience: 6+ years of dedicated experience in Localization Engineering, Software Engineering with an i18n focus, or Technical Globalization.

• CrowdIn Mastery: Extensive, hands-on experience configuring, troubleshooting, and automating workflows within CrowdIn / CrowdIn Enterprise, including deep familiarity with CrowdIn CLI, APIs, webhooks, and custom file format configurations.

• Experience configuring technical localization pipelines within Fintech, SaaS, or highly regulated software environments.

• Programming & Scripting Skills: Proficiency in at least two scripting languages (e.g., Python, Node.js/JavaScript, Bash) for API automation and data manipulation.

• CI/CD & Source Control: Solid experience with Git workflow models (branching, pull requests, merging) and modern CI/CD tooling (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins).

• i18n Standards & Formats: Deep understanding of software internationalization concepts (ICU formatting, Unicode, UTF-8, plural rules, RTL layout support) and localized file structures (JSON, YAML, Android XML, Apple Strings, PO, XLIFF).

• Problem Solving: Exceptional ability to debug complex file parsing, character encoding, and build pipeline failures independently.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with design-to-engineering translation tools (e.g., CrowdIn Figma integration, automated design token localization).

• Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and cloud services (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computational Linguistics, or equivalent technical experience.
